Most toilet overflows start with a clog, but the water is not always the same. If it came only from the bowl, it is usually gray water with light contamination, and if it came back up through a drain from the sewer side, it is treated as black water and handled like a sewage backup.
First steps after a toilet overflows
Take these steps in order while the floor is still wet:
- Close the valve behind the toilet and stop flushing
- Keep family members and pets out of the bathroom
- Lift rugs, towels and cabinet contents off the floor
- Look below for ceiling stains or dripping
Duarte's sanitary sewer and overflow cleanup
The Los Angeles County Sewer Maintenance Division maintains Duarte's sanitary sewer system under contract with the City of Duarte. When an overflow keeps repeating, the cause may be a blockage somewhere in the drain, and a plumber can scope it, but the water already on the floor still needs the same cleanup and drying.
What gets dried, removed and checked
Tile and sealed floors are extracted, cleaned and sanitized, while carpet, pad and baseboards that soaked up gray or black water are usually removed. Water can pass through the toilet flange and the floor into the ceiling below, so the crew checks that ceiling for stains and sagging. The subfloor and the lower wall are read with a moisture meter, and air movers dry them until the readings match dry reference points. For the full process, see Duarte water damage restoration.
